Feed belt from YouTube video in the practical stable

Farmer presentation Van der Steege

Since mid-2025, a new feedstar feed belt system with Vario control has been in use at the Van der Steege dairy farm in Aldtsjerk (Friesland). The farm cultivates around 140 hectares of land and keeps 180 dairy cows and 90 young cattle. With an impressive annual yield of 13,000 kg of milk per cow, the farm is one of the most productive dairy farms in the region.

In order to expand the barn without having to obtain additional permits, the Van der Steege family decided to install a feed belt. After gaining initial impressions abroad and finding further information on YouTube, they came across the feedstar system, which ultimately convinced them.

As part of the barn renovation, the slatted floor was replaced, old railings were sawn off, a feed ramp was built and the conveyor was installed – mostly by the family themselves. The system was delivered on a pallet and assembled with the help of the installer. Maintenance is straightforward: all that is required is to grease two grease nipples every two months.

The feed belt creates more space in the barn, extends the feeding passage by two metres and improves cow traffic to the milking robot. The animals eat relaxed next to each other at feed barriers and cubicle bars – without fighting for position and always in an upright posture.

The effect is particularly noticeable in everyday life: instead of having to push feed 5–6 times a day, the belt provides fresh feed around the clock. The cows are less selective, eat more evenly and consume more overall – which has a positive effect on milk yield. At the same time, the system saves the purchase costs for a feed pusher robot and a feed table coating – the investment in the belt has therefore quickly paid for itself.

It is also very easy to use: the feed mixer wagon is filled as usual with silage, maize and a premix. The feed is then distributed evenly over the belt in a few minutes at the touch of a button. Any remaining feed can also be removed at the touch of a button, falling into the pit via a flap, and can be conveniently removed with a shovel loader.

The result: more peace and quiet in the barn, less work and stable, high-performance milk production.
